AGRICULTURE AND LAND USE NATIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS INVENTORY SOFTWARE PROGRAM (ALU)

ALU is a free software package that guides users through application of the 2006 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector and encourages the use of IPCC Good Practice in greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories.

  • Implements the 2006 IPCC Guidelines and supports IPCC Tier 1 and 2 methodologies for the AFOLU sector

  • Promotes Transparency, Accuracy, Consistency, Completeness, and Comparability (TACCC) as recommended by IPCC Good Practice Guidance

  • Guides users through activity data input, emission factor assignment and emission calculations

  • Estimates uncertainties in emissions using methods described in the 2006 IPCC Guidelines

  • Emission estimate calculations include automated data checks to avoid obvious errors and explicit QA/QC steps for internal or external inventory review

  • Maintains a digital archive of all activity data, emission factors and equation parameters for use in future inventory reports

The ALU community include over 2000 registered users and growing!  The software is funded by the United States Environmental Protection Agency with support historically from the United States Agency for International Development and United States Forest Service.
